Course Content
Still life painting is a wonderful means by which to explore and develop the fundamentals of drawing and painting:
- Proportion and relative proportion
- Composition and the relationships of objects.
- Colour
- Focus and Edges
- Art material and techniques
It is also part of every student’s Foundation Course, as it allows them to systematically move through the different stages of the learning process (as above). A student will start with plaster casts but move onto still life painting in their first term. The foundation course is held every term and as a 4/5 day course in October and July.
Materials:
A Starter Painting Kit and further art materials are available from Lavender Hill Colours.
Recommended Further Studies:
We encourage students to compliment their studies by taking the time to visit exhibitions and practice sketching in museums. In addition, the Studios host a range of events throughout the term aimed at enhancing the artist’s understanding of their craft and the tradition that they are working within.
We recommend the following books available from Lavender Hill Colours.
Alla Prima II – Richard Schmid (paper back or hard cover)
Alla Prima Companion II – Katie Swatland
The Painter’s Methods & Materials – A.P.Laurie
Hensche on Painting – John W. Robichaux
A Manual of Oil Painting – John Collier
The Painter in Oil – Daniel B.Parkhurst
