David Shevlino Alla Prima Figure and Portrait Painting Workshop

Monday 26th – Friday 30th October 2026

10am – 5pm (with an hour lunch break in between) – ÂŁ580

COURSE CONTENTS:
This workshop is about painting the figure and portrait alla prima (wet into wet) and the techniques used to create a fresh, direct response to our subjects.
After a demonstration on the 1st and the 4th day by David, the class will work from a live model. Students will be doing figure paintings on the first three days and portrait paintings for the last two days. Emphasis will be on simplifying and interpreting the figure and head as a series of basic shapes/planes described by light and shadow. In addition to discussing value, colour and paint application, David will also talk about basic proportions of the head and figure. By learning to simplify what we see, students become better able to paint our subjects with greater clarity and directness.
This workshop will be particularly helpful to students who wish to paint more loosely and to use their brushstrokes with economy.
THE ARTIST:
David graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the University of Pennsylvania. He also studied at the Art Students’ League in New York. As a teen David developed a love of traditional figurative painting. Later he began exploring a looser paint application which straddles the line between representational painting and abstraction. He has exhibited his work throughout the US and regularly teaches workshops in the US & Europe.

Rooted in the Atelier tradition

From Renaissance Italy to our studios in London, we carry forward centuries of hands-on artistic training — where tutors work side by side with students to build real skill and confidence.

Always working from life

We believe drawing and painting from life is the most powerful way to develop as an artist. Every session — from plaster casts to live models — sharpens your eye and deepens your understanding of form, light, and colour.
