One-day Foundation Taster Course

Course structure:
This course is an overview of our foundation course, studying the fundamentals of drawing and oil painting.
Please arrive anytime from 9.30am for set-up. Teaching will be from 10am.
There will be a 45mins lunch break from 12:15 – 1pm and there is a coffee shop at the studios.
Course content:
Students learn the 4 key principles of drawing and painting: proportion, line & volume, chiaroscuro and colour.
In the morning, Students start with quick line exercises in charcoal on brown packing paper, building towards longer shaded drawing on textured paper.
In the afternoon they will be introduced to oil painting starting with grisaille and moving onto a limited palette still-life.
All work is either from the cast or still life set-ups.
Materials:
We will provide the basic materials, to borrow.
Students are very welcome to bring their own materials.

From a figure model, students learn proportion, gesture, values and paint application. Work begins with short exercises in charcoal to value & mass studies in grisailles to longer studies with a limited palette.

Students start with charcoal to understand the importance of shapes, mass and values in finding a likeness, then progress to painting, using the “Zorn” palette. There is a mix of short exercises and sustained poses.

Focusing on the fundamentals of intaglio printmaking, students learn the main etching techniques of intaglio & aquatint, working both in line and mass. Materials provided.
