Short Courses & Workshops
We run a series of Short Courses and Workshops throughout the year, please see Calendar & Prices for information.
The courses are held during the half-term and holiday breaks, in the winter they run from 9.30am-3.30pm, in summer time they run from 10am-4pm. The 4/5 day courses include a sketch club after class on Monday and a painting demonstration after class on Tuesday.
October Foundation Course – a four day intensive course suited to all levels. Students receive instruction in the fundamentals of drawing and painting, working from plaster casts and still life set-ups. On the last day there is the opportunity to apply these principles to the life model.
October half-term, Monday-Thursday, £300
December Portrait Course – a course for all levels. After a brief review of the fundamentals, students learn to apply proportion and values to the portrait model, beginning in charcoal and progressing to oil painting using a limited colour palette. All work is from the model, with a variety of short exercises and sustained poses.
Early December, Monday-Friday, £395
December Sculpture Course – suited to all levels, students will learn to handle clay and work in 3D. Work is from the portrait model, with preliminary exercises from the plaster cast.
Early December, Tuesday-Thursday, £260
February Figure Course – all levels welcome, students review the fundamental principles of proportion, gesture, chiaroscuro and colour working from the figure model. Work is in charcoal and oils.
February half-term, Tuesday – Thursday, £210
March/April Still Life & Flower Painting Course – all levels admitted. The course begins with a review of the fundamentals before considering in detail colour theories, composition and paint application. Students work from a variety of still-life set-ups.
Easter holidays, Tuesday-Thursday, £210
Materials Workshop – Scott Pohlschmidt, Director of Lavender Hill Colours art store, runs regular full day and half day workshops exploring the make-up of the artist’s materials from oil paints to brushes, from preparing your canvases to the finishing touches of your work. These are hands-on sessions.
These workshops are also given in partnership with Rosemary & Co. Artists’ Brushes, Michael Harding oil paints and Natural Pigments.
James Kroner – will be running an urban landscape course for the 2nd year running.
Mid-June, Friday- Sunday, £290
July Courses – this summer programme is the perfect immersion in fine arts training. For each of the four weeks in July students focus on a different discipline beginning with Foundation and progressing through Figure, Portrait, Landscape or Sculpture. Artists and students can choose to commit for the full four weeks, layering their knowledge and skills over the month; alternatively they than can select a single or combination of weeks to meet their needs and interests. July, Mondays-Fridays; one week, £375/395; two weeks, £725; three weeks, £1100; four weeks, £1300.
Henry Yan Courses – September 4 days drawing. 2/3 days painting. Henry Yan is a regular contributor to London Fine Art Studios academic calendar. He originally trained in China and is now based in the USA where he teaches at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Yan is a master draughtsman whose work is characterised by attention to anatomical detail and powerful gesture.

We encourage students to compliment their studies by taking the time to visit exhibitions and practice sketching in museums. In addition, the Studios host a range of events throughout the term aimed at enhancing the artist’s understanding of their craft and the tradition that they are working within.
